Chapter X : Two Words and a Train Ride

John Lloyd did not pursue the conversation. He reasoned to himself that they still had a lot of time. He was more worried about Sarah’s hiccups than he cared to admit. For most people, it was just something that happened on an ordinary day. But Sarah was not most people. She still had her heart condition. True that she seemed to be getting better, however John Lloyd could not just ignore the hiccups. He insisted to Sarah that they go back to Guangzhou and see her doctor.

She shrugged off his fears. She told him the hiccups happened not because of anything else but because she did not drink a glass of water after breakfast.

“ You made me forget. And then you kissed me. Made me forget some more.” She tried to make light of the situation. She knew any minute now, he would start packing their things and book a flight.

“I’m serious here Sarah. Let’s go back and see your doctor. We can always come here again. “ He reasoned with her.

Sarah did the unexpected. She kissed him. It was her first time to initiate the kiss. She took advantage of his shock. She let her lips linger on his for a few seconds before she pulled away.

“Please.” She used her eyes now to plead with him.

There was still the shocked look in his face before he finally recovered himself. He pulled her to his lap and started to kiss her again. Sarah suddenly feeling selfconscious tried to stop him with her hands. But she could not back down now.

“Promise me we’ll stay at least the whole day and go home tomorrow.”

“No, we go home today.” He insisted.

Sarah bit her lips. She seemed to make up her mind.

“Ok, we’ll go but later. Let’s do some sightseeing first. I’m okay. Don’t worry about me.”

He examined her and when he thought she would not budge, he agreed.

“Ok but you have to----”

“Thank you! “ She did not let him finish what he was saying. She kissed him again and quickly jumped off his lap.

“Let’s get ready now.”

She smiled at him and left the room before he could catch her again.

“Yes, Thank you. Yes. That’be great. Thank you. “

John Lloyd caught Sarah’s words before she placed down the receiver. He could see that her things were ready. They would probably just eat lunch in Beijing and would be back in Guangzhou by late afternoon. He went to her room to ask about the flight schedule that she prefered.

“What is it? Anything else, you need?” He inquired about the call she made.

He stayed by the door. He knew he would be forced to sing “I have two hands Baleleng” again to distract himself if he came inside the room and sat beside her.

Sarah was glowing in her blue top and tightfitting jeans while she smiled at him from her bed.

“Come here.” Sarah tapped the space next to her.

“Why? We’re running late.” He tightened his grip on the door handle. Oh no, Baleleng come rescue me again.

“No, we’re not. We have plenty of time. Why don’t you come and sit with me first?" Sarah widened her smile. "Afraid of me?”

Is Sarah flirting with me, dear Lord?

“If I sit there, I can’t promise that I’m not gonna sing again. Either you suffer from that or....” He let his words trail. He was watching Sarah’s reaction.

“What? Kiss me again?” She laughed and decided to come to him.

“I have two hands Baleleng..” He started to tease her by singing.

“You’re crazy. “ She said while she held his hand.

They looked at each other’s eyes. Just smiling. It was the last day of their weekend getaway, they wanted to bottle that moment and bring it home with them.

“Where do you want to go? But first, what time do i book our flight?”

“That’s settled already.”

“What do you mean?”

“Everything’s been handled. Don’t worry about it.”

“Sarah..” John Lloyd started to get suspicious. She must be planning something that’s why she was extra sweet to him.

“I promise, we’ll live for Guangzhou tonight.”

He continued to search her eyes.

She could not anymore delay it. She knew he’d blow off but he’d eventually come around.

“We’ll leave via train.”

“What?! That’s a too long travel for you!”

There it was.

Sarah gave him time to worry and let off steam before she said anything.

“We’ll fly to Guangzhou this afternoon, and see your doctor.”

Everything was all about timing. She put her plan to action.

She touched his arm first.

“Idan..”

He looked at her for a split second and tried to escape her. She blocked his way.

“Idan..Idan...Idan...” She repeatedly called his name while she tried to catch his eyes.

“Bebe..bebe..bebe..”

John Lloyd stood still and looked at her.

“Bebe..bebe..wooo.” She sang the Bieber song while she laughed. He tried to step away again, but she caught his face with both her hands. She knew there was really nothing to worry about. She had never felt better. He was just worrying too much.

“I’m okay, believe me. I should know. I’d tell you if I’m not feeling well, but now I just feel great.”

“But we have to make sure—“

“Ok, we’ll go to my doctor first thing tomorrow. Today, we’ll enjoy our stay here and leave tonight. “

“The train ride from here to Guangzhou is 12 hours!”

“And we’ll have 12 more hours together. Do you not want that? ” She kissed him on the cheek. Her final talisman delivered.

She knew she won the argument.

“You drive me crazy, do you know that?” He pinched her nose.

They spent the whole day visiting the less crowded places in Beijing. By 7 o’clock, they were in the train station. The train would leave at 8:30PM so that gave them time to eat dinner at a nearby restaurant. A couple of Filipino waiters recognized them but they pleaded not to take pictures of them. They understood.

There was already a line in the train station, and fortunately nobody seemed to notice them.

The tickets that Sarah bought were for a cabin. She was told that they would be sharing it with two more passengers.

“Where do you want to sleep?”

“Where do you want me? Here or on yours?” He teased her again.

She stuck out her tongue at him.

“Why? We’re alone in this cabin. No one will bother us if I sleep beside you.”

Sarah frowned and gave him a dagger look.

“I’m just kidding hehe. I bought the other two tickets so you can sleep comfortably. At least now, we don’t have to worry about sharing this with strangers.”

He kissed the top of her head before he busied himself with their bags.

This time, he won.

“Idan?”

“Yes?”

They were both lying on their respective beds. The train had already left Beijing.

“Nevermind.”

“Try to get some sleep. “ He told her.

After awhile she stood up and went to the door.

“Where’re you going?”

“CR”

“I’ll come with you.”

She was about to argue but thought better of it. She didn’t want to try her luck. She knew he would just insist that he accompany her. That had been the case the whole day. He did not allow her to be out of his sight. She complained but he just shrugged it off, denying it.

Good thing she let him come with her to the comfort room.

The words in the train’s comfort room door were in Chinese. She could not distinguish which was closed or opened. She tried the red one. The door still opened. The green one, the same thing.

“Lloydy, just hold the door for me please. I don’t know how to close it.”

“Sure. You okay in there?”

“Yes.” Sarah smiled to herself. An image came to mind.

10.4

They both slept late the next day. Contrary to what John Lloyd imagined the train ride to be, it was actually comfortable. The movement of the train lulled them to sleep. From time to time he would sneak a peek at the sleeping Sarah, checking if she was comfortable.

When he opened his eyes next, the sun was up and Sarah was reading from her cellphone. A worried look at her face.

“Something’s wrong?”

“No. Nothing.”

“Sarah”

She took a deep breath before she answered him again.

“Mommy is in the apartment now. She arrived this morning. And..”

John Lloyd didn’t need to hear the rest of it nor read the message her mother sent her. He knew already. He knew that they were both in trouble.

When he asked permission from her father about their trip to Beijing, her father was also hesitant at first. He was worried about what his wife would say. Yet he knew that Sarah needed the trip so he agreed and made John Lloyd promise that he would take care of her, and that it would be a secret to her mother.

They did not expect her to come until the following week.

So, all of them were in trouble now.

There was no cellphone signal anymore so they could not reply and tell her parents that they were on their way to Guangzhou. John Lloyd knew Sarah was worried. She was fidgeting all through out their brunch.

“Don’t worry yourself too much. I’ll explain it to Tita.” She removed her hand when he tried to hold it. He let it pass.

They still had their usual banter but Sarah seemed to be pre-occupied and merely reacting to him to get her mind off the looming scolding from her mother. John Lloyd tried to touch her hand again to comfort her but she took her hand away.

“So, this is how it’s going to be?”

“Huh?”

“When we get off this train, I’m not going to matter again.” He said matter of factly.

“What do you mean?”

“I attempted several times to hold you hand but you avoided it. Why?”

“You must know why.”

“No. I don’t understand it. Explain it to me. What have I done wrong?”

Sarah kept quiet.

“When we get off this train, we’ll both pretend that nothing’s between us? That we have no relationship? That’s what you want, right?”

“There’s still no us. There’s no relationship.” Fear and tears in her voice.

John Lloyd could not speak right way. There was a clog in his throat. They both remained quiet. The train was bringing them closer to their destination while this latest fight was drawing them away from each other.

“So that is your answer..”

When Sarah did not speak, he went out of the cabin.

***

10.5

It was almost 6 o’clock when John Lloyd came back. He was not speaking to her even during dinner.

“Sorry.” Sarah quietly apologized.

“Sorry for what?”

“I’m sorry for hurting. I’m sorry for not being ready yet.... It doesn’t mean that I care less for you. I have my reasons.”

“What reasons? That you don’t trust me enough to risk having a relationship with me?”

“My parents..”

“I get that. I understand that you are worried about your parents, but you know that we can get their permission. You’re of age already. They may not agree at first but if we fight for what we feel for each other, they’d be okay with us.”

“But—“

“What? You've thought of another problem again? You just keep coming up with reasoons not to be with me that sometimes I think between the two of us, it’s only me who’s insisting there’s really love. Am I? Am I just insisting on it when there’s none actually?”

“Of course not. There is. Just give me time.” She finally said.

***

10.6

They reached Guangzhou a little before 9o’clock. They called Sarah’s parents from the taxi and explained why they were not able to reply. Her father told them that Sarah’s mother was worried but was okay now. He had explained the situation to her.

Although both of them knew that they would still hear it from her mother.

John Lloyd handed Sarah a folded piece of paper while they were in the elevator.

“I have two words for you to help you decide. Just choose one. Open it when you’re ready and let me know.”

She kept the paper.

She held on to it while they faced her mother and received her scolding. She held on to it when John Lloyd left for his apartment. She held on to the piece of paper until she went inside her room.

She held on to it when John Lloyd managed to convince her parents that he instead go with Sarah for her check-up. She held on to it when John Lloyd told her the following week that he had to leave and go back to the Philippines to settle some unfinished business that he could not put off any longer.

Sarah held on to the two words that John Lloyd gave her.

One or the other. If she chose one, she’d have to cross out the other.

Two words.

NO JOHNLLOYD.

Those were her two choices.

Chapter IX :Lovehandles, and Playful Courage

Sarah woke up disoriented but feeling light at the same time. She took a peek at her room, trying to remember where she was and why she was feeling happy. She felt the smile on her face even before she actually realized she was doing so the minute she opened her eyes. She pulled her sheets tight, planning to catch five more minutes of sleep when a note on her bedside table caught her eye.

She reached for it.

“Good morning J Miss me?

I miss you more,

so get up and join me for

breakfast you sleepyhead, hehe.

Swimming pool Sars, wearing my trunks now.

*____* “

Sarah remained motionless, looking at the ceiling. The note in her hand, on her chest. After awhile, she seemed to make up her mind. She pushed from the bed and dialed the hotel’s frontdesk.

I’ll get my revenge this time, you just wait Mr. John Lloyd Cruz.

Her eyes twinkled.

9.2

When he saw that Sarah was still sound asleep, he tiptoed in her room and left her a note. Swimmng was still a strenuous activity for her, but he could not resist teasing her. He actually was wearing a pair of shorts, and not the trunks that he claimed in his note.

“Oh, so you’re here alone?”

“Hmmm not exactly.” JohnLloyd didn’t know how to avoid giving too much information.

He had been sitting by himself beside the hotel’s swimming pool when this pretty girl approached her and started a conversation. She recognized him. She said she was a fan from Canada but was visiting China with friends.

“Ah, you’re with your family.”

JohnLloyd just smiled at her.

“D’you mind if I sit here while you wait for them?” She asked as she made herself comfortable in the reclining chair next to him. She spread her towel and lied down there in her red two-piece bikini and her long legs in all their glory.

“Will you have a show in Canada soon? You should, you have a lot of Filipino fans there.” She continued.

“There’s one next year, I think. I’m not yet sure of my sched.”

John Lloyd kept stealing glances at the entrance, afraid that Sarah would appear any minute now.

“It’s really great seeing you here. I’ve been a fan since A Very Special Love. You and Sarah look good together.”

He looked at her and smiled back when he heard Sarah’s name.

“I saw that more than a couple of times. Gosh! I almost scheduled a flight to the Philippines so I could watch it right away. Crazy, right?” She gave a tiny laugh. JohnLloyd felt amused also but for a different reason. He was smiling when he looked again at the doorway.

Sarah was standing there, in her white bathrobe. She looked at the girl beside him, then back at him. John Lloyd caught her eye and made an imperceptible shake of his head.

Sarah’s eyes furrowed.

“Tell me if i’m being a nuisance already. I’ll leave right away. No worries.” The girl who introduced herself as Katrina was speaking again.

“Actually, I have to go now. Nice meeting you.” He extended his hand for a handshake and got up from his chair.

He looked again where Sarah was. He saw her give him a dagger look before she turned and left.

He gave a quick nod to Kat and ran after Sarah. He couldn’t call her name or that would be a give away. He saw Sarah turned right, heading to the direction of the cafeteria.

***

9.3

There was a buffet breakfast.

Sarah was talking to a foreign guy as she was filling up her plate. She was even smiling at him. John Lloyd sided up to her and tried to listen in to their conversation. Sarah transfered to the opposite side of the table, making it obvious that she was avoiding him. She continued talking to the guy. They were talking about the nice places in the Philippines, with Sarah suggesting some places to visit.

“I’ll be going there Wednesday. I wouldn’t mind a pretty company.” The guy offered.

“Ehem. Hi I’m JohnLloyd and I’m with her.” He shook the guy’s hand and turned to Sarah.

“Are you eating that? I already ordered our breakfast.”

“ I’m sorry. Nice meeting you Asher.” The foreign guy who sounded like a Briton took the cue and left them.

Sarah smiled at him and gave a brief annoyed look at JohnLloyd.

“You’re talking to a complete stranger in your bathrobe.” He complained. He looked impatient now.

“Let’s go back to our room so you can change first.”

She became more irritated.

“I’m okay. I can take care of myself. Go back to your flirting.” She walked toward one of the tables there.

“What flirting? We were just talking. She approached me and---- What is this? Are you jealous?” He grinned.

“No, I’m not. I don’t know who that "jealous" is. I’m Sarah, I’m hungry and I’m eating in my robe. I don’t care.”

“Bebe ko. Smile na. We were just talking, really.” He coaxed her.

“I’m hungry too. I haven’t had my breakfast yet.” He reached for her hand but she deftly avoided it. She stood up and and carried her plate to another table. The British guy was seated there.

JohnLloyd sat the full ten minutes that she was eating and talking to the guy. His eyes fixed at the back of Sarah’s head. When the guy looked at his direction, JohnLloyd squinted his eyes and stared him down. The guy quickly finished his food and left Sarah.

John Lloyd stood and went out of the hall. He waited for Sarah outside.

Sarah came out after a minute. She looked surprised when she saw him still standing there. Without a word, he joined her as she walked toward the elevator.

No word passed between them. Not in the the fifth floor. Not in the eight floor. On the tenth, the elevator stopped and opened again. A Chinese couple joined them. Sarah looked at the brooding John Lloyd at her right.

“Why didn’t you eat breakfast? I thought you said you hadn’t eaten yet.”

“Now, we’re talking?” His voice crisp.

Sarah did not utter another word until they reached their floor. John Lloyd opened his room without a word.

***

9.4

“knock, knock.” She quietly entered his room through the adjoining door.

John Lloyd was standing just beside it. He did not say anything so she made a few more steps until she was beside his bed.

“Ok. I’m sorry. It was childlish of me to behave that way.” She was the first to back down this time.

He looked at her. She made funny faces. He tried to suppress his smile but failed.

“Yay, you’re not mad at me anymore.” She dimpled her way around his anger and she knew she won. He walked toward her.

“Wait. You stop there.” She put her arms around her. She was still wearing a bathrobe.

“I’ll just hug you, I promise.”

“No. You can’t see nor even feel what I’m wearing inside. That’s your punishment for talking to that woman. Your loss. I was ready for a good swim. Hah!”

“What?” JohnLloyd looked amused now.

“Why am I being punished for talking to a fan?”

“A fan who happens to be very beautiful and sexy, whose legs start from her neck.”

“Well, that's true.”

Sarah squinched her eyes at him.

“She is pretty, but I love you remember? I only have eyes for you.” He continued.

Sarah’s eyes widened when he again confessed to her. They both knew that it was something that they needed to still talk about. Though both had an idea of how the other felt, where they stood or if they were already in a relationship was not clear yet. At least to JohnLloyd.

Sarah chose to ignore the obvious at that moment and went on teasing him.

“I thought you were really wearing trunks, so I wore a two-piece.”

He smiled. Clearly not believing her.

She bluffed. “You said we’re going swimming. You expect me to wear my pajamas in the pool? I phoned the frontdesk and bought a pair. “

JohnLloyd’s eyes almost bulged out, especially when she untied her robe.

“You’re not serious.” He said. He took a serious look as stayed rooted in his spot.

Sarah smiled at him.

“Here you go!” She quickly opened her robe. And JohnLloyd closed his eyes.

“Gotcha! Ha ha!” Sarah was now laughing. She remembered the aghast look in his face before he closed his eyes as she opened her robe to show what she was wearing inside. She laughed some more when she glanced at him looking pleasantly bemused at what she managed to pull.

She was wearing a pair of white shorts and a pink top underneath her robe.

JohnLloyd went to her and kissed her. It was just a brief kiss. A smack. But it effectively stopped her from laughing. Not that laughing was bad for her. In the past weeks, she noticed that laughing came easy to her. There was a time that just laughing made her tired. That was not the case now. She must be recovering her health fast.

“You don’t fight fair.” Sarah argued.

“I know.” JohnLloyd smiled at her and pulled her to him.

***

9.5

“Idan..”

“Hmm...?”

They had been standing in an embrace in the middle of his room.

“What’s this?” Sarah squeezed John Lloyd’s sides. A smile in her voice.

“Those are lovehandles.”

“Really? They feel like fats to me.”

“You sure of that? They don’t feel like lovehandles to you?” JohnLloyd, not letting go of her, guided her hand to his right side.

“Yes, they are fats. Not the lovehandles you claim them to be.”

“Probably because, you don’t really love me.” He put a space between them so he could look at her.

“Do you love me?”

She was caught off guard with his question. He felt her loosen her arms around him. He tightened his hold.

“Are we in a relationship? Are you now my girlfriend?”

She looked up to his eyes. She seemed to be looking for her answer there.

“Yes, I know you’re a tortoise. I get that now. But I’m a tortoise too. You might find it hard to believe, but if you peel me, you’d find out that I also need a love that stays. In a million years. Forever.”

“I –-I---hic!” She covered her mouth. Her words were interrupted by a sudden attack of hiccups.

“Not funny Sarah.”

She made a motion, asking him for water. He realized she was not playing him, so he dashed to the refrigerator in the room to get her bottled water.

He sat her down on his bed , pulled a chair in front of her and helped her drink. Even after her hiccups subsided, he still wore a worried frown in his face.

“You okay?” He touched her face.

She smiled and nodded at him.

He kissed her again. Softly. A light kiss.

------

I changed the title several times.. if I change it again in the next few days/weeks, I guess this chapter's destiny is that.. "going to whereever it brings me". That's how I wrote it. No clear plot/direction. I just followed what the Lloydie in my head was telling me, of how the story should go. The only thing clear to me was Lloydie's lovehandles must appear in this chapter hehe. The Sarah in my head insisted that they should. :)

Again, please leave your comments. Thanks

Kat, here you go. As promised. haha

Chapter VIII : Wine, Sorry, and Baleleng

12:30, Lunch time.

Sarah and John Lloyd were still busy with their pillow fight.

When John Lloyd saw his chance, he jumped in at Sarah’s bed. He pulled the sheets up to his neck.

“Tulog na tayo.” He gave Sarah a naughty grin.

Sarah didn’t think twice. She used both her legs. With all her strength. She kicked him off the bed.

“Get off.”

John Lloyd tumbled down the floor with the sheets. Only to get on the bed again.

“Tulog na tayo.” He continued to tease her.

On her third attempt to kick him, he was able to avoid her busy feet. He stood up, pinned her legs with his legs and caught her hands.

“Let me go. “ Sarah, tried the razor in her eyes. John Lloyd just looked at her, a smile in his eyes.

She started to struggle. Her legs. Her hands.

He hugged her. Tight.

Then, everything stopped.

Her struggle. His teasing.

They became aware that they were alone in the room. Their heartbeats were almost palpable.

Sarah could hear her own breathing, or was it John Lloyd’s?

She heard him humming a familiar song in her ears. She listened.

Is he really humming that song?

Her laughter started from her stomach until it reached her mouth. John Lloyd stopped humming to look at her.

“You’re laughing at me.”

Sarah continued to laugh. John lloyd let go of her, and sat at the edge of the bed watching her double with laughter.

“You think, this is the right time to laugh?”

In between bouts of laughter, Sarah started to talk but another wave came, and she started laughing again. When she could finally control herself, she told him.

“Why in the world were you singing Baleleng?! Ha ha ha”

She was familiar with that Aegis song, and it was a good song. But never had she imagined John lloyd humming that, much more when he was hugging her. He sounded so ridiculous during that moment.

She laughed hard again. She couldn’t stop.

John lloyd stood up, and walked towards his own room.

“Where’re you going? Mr. Baleleng..hahaha”

“To change, and have lunch. Or you want to stay here, and have me for lunch?”

John Lloyd got his revenge. He whistled his way out, while Sarah was still thinking of a rebuff.

8.2

They chose to eat in a restaurant near their hotel. They had no plans yet of where to actually go.

Sarah wanted to see the Wall of China. John Lloyd didn’t want to. He explained that the place would be full of tourists, and some might probably recognize them. She insisted that they could try hiding in their hoodies again, like what they did in Macau.

“What’s the point of coming here, if we’re not seeing the Wall?” She complained.

John Lloyd was unrelenting. The truth was, he was worried that the hike would be too much for her.

Sarah frowned at him, and walked towards their rented car.

While Sarah was changing for lunch, John Lloyd phoned the receptionist and asked if he could hire a car, and a driver who could speak English.

John Lloyd tried to catch her hand. She avoided it.

“Bebe, please. “ He tried holding her hand again.

Sarah stopped walking.

“First, I’m not your Bebe. Stop calling me that. We’re in China, this is a Communist country so your freedom of speech does not apply here. You understand, Mr. Baleleng?” She gave him a wide smile.

John Lloyd pulled her to him and almost kissed her. He remembered they were in China.

At that moment, he hated China and its Communist ruling.

***

“See, this is much better.”

He and Sarah were walking along the streets of Beijing. It was almost dark now, and the streets were lighted already.

“Hmmm” was Sarah’s only reply.

They continued to walk quietly. It was February. There was no snow anymore, but the cold wind caused them to shudder from time to time.

John Lloyd tighten his hold of Sarah’s hand.

Sarah stopped walking and gazed up at an electronic billboard. It was showing a video of a Chinese celebrity singing on a stage.

They watched for a few seconds.

“You miss it.” He whispered. It was more of a statement than a question.

Sarah slowly turned her head and looked at him.

He squeezed her hand.

8.3

“I’m so hungry!”

“Are you okay? Not tired?” John Lloyd was worried that all that walking and sightseeing made her exhausted.

“Nope. Just hungry.” She smiled.

She opened her mouth only to close it again.

“What is it?”

“Nothing. Let’s order first.”

They dined in their hotel, near the swimming pool.

“Would you like to go swimming after dinner?’

“Are you gonna wear a two-piece? If you are, then yes!” John Lloyd couldn’t resist teasing her.

Sarah shot him a dagger look. He laughed.

They were almost finished with their meal, with Sarah toying with her food, when she asked him.

“Lloydie, why are you here?”

“Is that a serious question?” He couldn’t believe his ears.

Sarah nodded.

“You seriously don’t know?”

“You’ve never said anything. You just appeared at my door with your suitcase.”

“Well, you’re right.”

She was right. He just told her he wanted to be with her. He had never told her his reason. His feelings.

John Lloyd felt his hands get clammy. His throat went dry. His heart stopped, then burst out running.

He took a sip of his wine. His only glass. He was with Sarah. He needed his wits around him. Her presence was enough to get him tipsy.

He started to speak, but stopped. He didn’t know where to begin. What words to say. He knew he loved her, but would telling her “I love you” be enough?

Sarah looked up and waited for him to speak.

“I’m here because you’re special to me.” He said when he finally found his voice.

Sarah was about to speak but he continued.

“Because I love you.”

Sarah closed her eyes for a moment, when she opened them, they had tears on them.

She did not speak. She just sat there quietly.

“Now would be the best time to say something.” John Lloyd said.

She remained seated and did not utter a word. She started to speak after awhile.

“I want to believe that. I honestly do. I want to say I know that you love me. But there’s a voice in my head that refuses to believe that.”

John Lloyd was the one quiet now.

“For one thing, do you not realize that you hurt me when you decided to cut me off your life? You told me we could not talk anymore, not even as friends. And without explanation, without even saying sorry, you were there at my doorstep. You never said sorry. Where does your love figure in all this?”

Sarah was looking at him now. He was quiet.

She stood up when he did not say anything.

“I’ll go up now.” Her knees were trembling but it was her heart which collapsed first.

John Lloyd remained where he was. He looked at his glass of wine.

***

Her door opened. She looked at him but stayed seated on her bed.

He walked toward the farthest edge of her bed and sat there.

All was quiet. Neither of them breathing lest they broke the moment.

She faced him. He glanced at her and looked away.

“I never said sorry. I was hurting. But I knew I hurt you also.”

He looked at her eyes.

“If I say sorry for leaving you ---if i say sorry for hurting you , I might forgive myself.”

He looked at the floor to hide his tears.

Sarah went to him and put her arms around him.

***

“I’m sorry also.” Sarah whispered.

They had been in a tight hug for awhile now. Then she heard the Baleleng humming again.

“Is there a logical explanation to what you’re doing? You’re singing Baleleng again.” Sarah was now both amused and curious.

“I’m actually singing:

“I have two hands Baleleng,
the left and the right.
Hold them up high Baleleng,
so clean and bright...””

John Lloyd sang to a laughing Sarah.

“Whatever for?”

“To protect you.”

Sarah’s eyes widened.

” I’m trying to protect you so let me be in my humming ang singing.” He smiled at her and walked toward the adjoining door.

Sarah could hear him start his singing again when he closed the door.
